Over the past five months, I have seen more movies than I have in years and I owe it all to the COVID quarantine. Although I watch all types of movies, I thought I would share some documentaries about the stock market/economy that I found interesting. Listed below are five documentaries in the order they hit the big screen, starting with the most recent. All of these documentaries are either on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, or HBO.

How China Got Rich – Amazon Prime, 2019

Director: Michael Wood

The Wizard of Lies – Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO original, 2017 Cast: Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer star as Bernie and Ruth Madoff

Director: Barry Levinson, written by Sam Levinson, Sam Baum, and John Burnham Schwartz, based on the book of the same name by Diana B. Henriques.

The movie takes place in the aftermath of the arrest of Bernie Madoff in 2008 for orchestrating the biggest Ponzi scheme in history. Roger Ebert.com.

The Big Short – Netflix, Amazon Prime, 2015 Cast: Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt.

Director: Adam McKay. Written by McKay and Charles Randolf and based on the 2010 book “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine” by Michael Lewis.

Based on the true story of four outsiders who anticipated the 2007-08 global economic collapse and made a bet against the U.S. mortgage market. Wikipedia.org

Too Big to Fail – Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, 2011 All-star cast: William Hurt, Paul Giamatti, Ed Asner, James Wood, Warren Buffet, Topher Grace, Cynthia Nixon and many more.

Director: Curtis Hanson and based on Andrew Ross Sorkin’s book “Too Big to Fail: The Inside Story of How Wall Street and Washington Fought to Save the Financial System – and Themselves (2009).

This movie chronicles the 2008 financial meltdown, focusing on the actions of U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Chairman of the Fed Ben Bernanke to prevent a global economic meltdown. Wikipedia.org

Inside Job – Netflix, Amazon Prime, 2010 Academy Award® Winner for Best Documentary

Director and producer: Charles Ferguson, narrated by Matt Damon

Investigates the causes of the global financial crisis that unfolded in 2007-08. The beauty of Inside Job is that it makes the potentially daunting topic of the meltdown completely accessible to the masses. You don’t need to be a banker or an economist to follow it. Amazon.com.
