The Effect A.I. Won’t Have On The Future

It feels like recently there was a major, sudden leap in the capabilities of artificial intelligence (A.I.). What actually took place was a new entrant into the space of A.I. (ChatGPT) that provides broader access to A.I.’s capabilities. Technologies like Google’s Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa, and Apple’s Siri are forms of A.I. that have been around for years. Companies like Facebook (Meta) and Amazon have also been using A.I. for equally as long to cater advertisements on the internet.

While A.I. is capable of many, sometimes complex, tasks, A.I. is not capable of replacing human intuition or interaction. This is important to remember when alarmists shout about A.I. taking over, replacing jobs, or worse, causing a whole portion of our population to be unemployable. A more likely outcome is that A.I. will assist us with repetitive and time-consuming tasks throughout the day and overnight. This will improve our efficiency and allow us to spend our valuable, limited time interacting with each other and applying our intuition to solve bigger and more significant problems.

So, will A.I. take over? Maybe, but not like in the movies or alarmist news articles. Just like the innovations of railroads, freeways, airlines, and the internet, A.I. could change society and the economy, but it won’t take over the world. Personally, I look forward to a future when healthcare workers can spend more time listening and caring for patients rather than recordkeeping and sales representatives can focus on helping you find the right product or outfit for an occasion instead of ringing you up at the register.
